An Underrated Aspect of Waking Up Early : Backed by Experiment

Welcome !

This is a blog post that tackles an issue almost 80% people deal with : WAKING UP EARLY.

Now given the kind of lifestyle our generation is exposed to, it's no wonder why sleeping on time & waking up early feels like an ordeal of infinite magnitude. Sadly, like many others, I have felt it all my life & rarely succeeded.

Now there are hundreds of explanations about how to do that effectively. There is the role of diet, exercise, surrounding temperature, sound etc. But there is one parameter that's arguably most dominant :  LIGHT, specifically SUNLIGHT.

Prof./Podcaster, Andrew Huberman is by far the biggest supporter of this notion on social media. He has repeatedly emphasized the role of SUNLIGHT when it comes to waking up early (& also sleeping early).

According to science, when we are exposed to light of higher intensity there is reduction in melatonin (sleep hormone) & rise of cortisol (hormone during activity). So, better the intensity better the chance that we wake up.

But you know, this is all theory. One might ask, why sunlight ? What's wrong with artificial bulb ? So, I decided to conduct an experiment to measure light.

I downloaded an App (recommended by Prof. Huberman) called LIGHT METER. Then I used it to detect light intensity inside my room in various positions. After that, I slowly moved outside, where I can get real sunlight. Now, here is all the readings I got.

You can see, there is nearly 30 times rise in intensity if I get too close to light. Now, I am changing position from my room towards open space near the balcony.

As you can see as I am shifting position from my bed towards sun light, there is a rise in intensity level from 539 to 63625 (more than 118 times).

Now more light means more photon. More photon means less melatonin. Less melatonin means higher chance of feeling wakeful & active.

Now I think there is enough evidence to believe that people who say "wake up & get some sunlight" aren't wrong. Also, making it a habit in morning  could be a blessing in disguise, that gives a strong head start to an otherwise regular day.

Anxiety : A Constantly Degrading Gen-Z Problem...

Since the beginning of 2012, a time when smartphones entered Indian market in leaps & bounds, something has changed. This is the time when the early Gen-Zs (born between 1996 to 2001) were in their high-school years, mid Gen-Zs (2003 to 2007) were in their primary-school years & lower Gen-Zs (2008 to 2012) were in their Childhood years.  Gone are the times of Nokia, when phones were used for calls, messages, alarm clock & snake games. As time passed phones grew smarter. The design focus shifted from general utility to user experience. Then from user experience to addictive user experience.  Powered by cutting edge chips, high end software designs, AI insertion & rigorous software updates smartphones grew from basic to prime to ultra-prime. While this is a boon for a majority of generations, like the millennials, who have the necessary self control to use them with caution, the younger generations (Gen-Zs & lower) had to confront something totally alien....

Sukua : The Boy behind an Innocent Scandal

He was like an animal from a different planet. Very fondly his parents named him "Sukua". He was 15 & was working as a helper at SAHU'S KITCHEN, a 3 star hotel. But you don't know him if you don't know about his beloved. Nothing makes him happier than the smell of his beloved, rum.   Every night, after work, he would keep pushing Sahu Mausa, the hotel owner, for a 100ml bottle of rum & as usual, mausa would come up with his regular response "Shut up ". But what bothers him most is when he catches Sahu Mausa passing a bottle to Bisu (his senior co-worker), every single night. But oneday, he got an idea.  After his job, he reached the hotel bunker & broke the news : " Fire. Fire. Hotel on fire ". Every other staff rushed outside only to discover that it was a prank pulled by Sukua. They returned to the bunker to make it even with Sukua, but he was sitting like a stone. Not a single word. Just a weird look on his face & eyes toward...

The Face of Frustration

There is never a time when I have not enjoyed Math. Atleast that was my idea when i was in class 10. Then I came to +2 & faced a chapter called "permutation & combination" which gave me a blow hard enough to snatch my earlier idea. I hated it from top to bottom. Later on I faced "probability" in 2nd year which made me feel even worse. Somehow I was successful in consoling myself that I was still good in math especially in "relation & function" which holds an elite reputation among all chapters.  When I joined CET for B-Tech I was in ecstasy because I no longer have to frustrate myself with probability again. But my joy lasted for a year when I came to know that in GATE exam there is rarely a time when a question from probability is not asked. It was hard to digest. Later on I thought joining Made Easy might help. So I did that in 3rd year for a 2 year programme just like most of my classmates did. Did it change anything ?  Ofcourse no, other...
